The Importance of Sleep and How to Achieve It

We all know that sleep is important, especially for people with epilepsy.  Lack of sleep can be a seizure trigger.  However, there are many benefits of a good night’s sleep which will make us all healthier, more energetic, and happier.

According to Kevin Loria of Business Insider, if you get the recommended amount of sleep (most likely 8-9 hours per night), you will:

·         be more likely to be physically fit.
·         learn better.
·         make better financial decisions.
·         be a safer driver.
·         be less likely to have depression and mood/anxiety problems.
·         be more productive and focused.

It is important to remember that everyone has their individual sleep requirements.  One person may function well with only three hours per night while another may need 12 hours per night.  You need to find out what you need to operate at your best.

Some tips on how to improve your sleep include:

·         Exercise regularly
·         Keep a consistent sleep schedule
·         Stop intense activities before sleeping (put away electronic devices!)
·         Consider doing meditation

Hopefully, this way, we will all lessen our seizures and live overall healthier and happier lives.
