Hi
everyone! I apologize for being away for so long. Seems like life has been
flying by. Anyway, it’s November, which means that it is National Epilepsy Awareness
Month! There have been many advances in epilepsy therapy in the past year or
two, as new medications and devices keep coming out or improving.
For
example, the VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulator), in its latest model, is supposed to
be able to detect when a seizure is about to happen and deliver a stimulation
to prevent it. The RNS (Responsive Neurostimulation) is the stimulator placed
in the brain that targets the seizure area(s) and delivers the stimulation only
when a seizure is about to happen.
Diets,
including the Ketogenic diet, Modified Atkins diet, or the Low Glycemic index
diet are used, often successfully to control seizures. The Ketogenic diet,
especially in children is especially helpful to many.
Also,
to be used under close advisement, certain herbs and supplements and other
alternative treatments may be beneficial to people with epilepsy.
As
always, a healthy dose of exercise is good for all of us. Depending on your
situation, regulate the intensity of your workout and make sure to take breaks
and drink plenty of water.
Since
there is no cure right now, the best we can do is to advocate for ourselves to
get the best possible treatment and stay as healthy as we can in general. It is
going to be a challenge, but that is life, isn’t it? In the meantime, we keep
hope alive.
