Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day.  We honor our military on this day in recognition of their service to our country.  Without them, we would not be the strong nation we are today.

However, as a country, we are failing in our duty to provide for them.  Many
of them come back with war-related injuries that require medical attention.  Especially, the more than 2.2 million troops who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq often have to deal with traumatic brain injury.  Of these, about 440,000 of these soldiers will develop epilepsy as a result.

Despite the need for epilepsy care and research, the funding is not there to adequately treat and cure every case of epilepsy.  We are a long way off from achieving that goal.  Epilepsy is as common as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease combined. Yet, it receives much less attention than the others.

Once we bring epilepsy in the minds and hearts of the public, and therefore, to the people who have power, only then will we be able to effectively secure the money we need to find a cure for, and perhaps prevent epilepsy so that our veterans do not have to worry about dealing with seizures later in life.
