There
is an online webinar entitled “Supporting Students with Epilepsy and Seizures in School” which was recorded on September 15, 2015. It was conducted by the Epilepsy Foundation,
with two speakers— Rebecca Schultz, RN and Director of the First Seizure Clinic
at Baylor College of Medicine and Donna McKenny, Lead Nurse of Centennial
Schools in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
They
addressed epilepsy awareness, explaining what a seizure is and the major types
of seizures, and seizure first aid.
Then, they went into detail about how to create a Seizure Response and
Action plan for your child with epilepsy.
This includes assessing your child’s needs, tailoring interventions as
needed depending on the types of seizures he or she has. All this should be done together with
parent(s), student, healthcare provider, and school nurse. Also, staff training is a must. Teachers must be aware of what to do in case
of a seizure. They provided a link to a toolkit that helps parents through this process.
This
should take out some of the fear in planning for your child’s education. By discussing it in the open, you will ensure
your child’s safety and open up a conversation about epilepsy which will
hopefully diminish, if not remove, the stigma of it. Once people understand what epilepsy is, they
will be less likely to judge you because of it.
