Tomorrow
(9/26/2015) is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. It is a national program aimed at getting rid
of unnecessary medications, drugs which may fall into the wrong hands.
There
is a danger of having old, unused medications around the house. Seniors sometimes take them incorrectly,
children may take them accidentally, or drug abusers may steal them.
According
to Steve Gray, a Kaiser Permanente pharmacist, there are some other methods of
avoiding having an overstock of medications at home.
1.
Prescribe
in small quantities. When starting a new
medication, it is a good idea to have a short term supply to see if it
works. Only after the medication works
for you, should you get a long-term supply.
2.
Mail-back
envelopes. Many pharmacies sell prepaid,
unused-medication envelopes that you can use to mail back any old medication
that you don’t need. The envelopes are
federally approved.
If you have any old, unnecessary medications
to get rid of, you can take it to a collection site near you.
