Today
is Halloween and many children will go trick-or-treating tonight. When I was a child, this was my favorite
holiday besides Christmas because of the candy I would get by the end of the
night.
Although
it is fun to go door-to-door all dressed up, it is important to take some
safety precautions:
safety precautions:
·
Always
go in a group, or at least with one other person
·
Young
children should go supervised with an adult
·
Wear
a costume that is easy to move around in (no long sashes or dresses you might
trip on)
·
Wear
a costume that is breathable (rather than a face-mask, use makeup)
For
children with epilepsy, there are additional concerns:
·
Do
not forget to take medications
·
If
flashing (strobe) lights are a trigger, watch out for them while outside
·
If
they are on a special diet (ketogenic, modified Atkins, etc.), approve the
candy before they eat it
·
Make
sure the people in their group are aware of the type(s) of seizure(s) they have
and that they have a first aid plan in place
·
Come
home at a reasonable hour so your sleep schedule doesn’t get messed up
This
last point is especially important for children with epilepsy since
irregularities in sleep can be a serious seizure trigger.
Have
a very Happy and Safe Halloween!
